Job Description

Enrolled Nurse (Emergency Department)

Department of Health - Queensland is seeking an Enrolled Nurse for their Emergency Department at Cairns Hospital. This is a full-time, onsite position.

The Emergency Department (ED) serves as the initial point of contact for many individuals with the health system. Emergency services are tasked with receiving, triaging, assessing, stabilising, and managing patients of all age groups presenting with a spectrum of illnesses and injuries, from non-acute to critical and urgent. The department also facilitates referrals for ongoing care.

Cairns Hospital's Emergency Department operates at CSCF level 5* and provides emergency services to the Cairns and Hinterland and Torres and Cape Regions. It supports a total of 53 facilities across CHHHS and TCHHS and manages transfers from Papua New Guinea. The ED offers a 24-hour, 365-day service for adults and children, covering urgent and non-urgent complaints from admission through to discharge.

Your role will involve:

  • Recording and interpreting clinical observations and healthcare data.
  • Recognising and communicating changes in patient conditions to the Registered Nurse (RN) and contributing to the formulation of subsequent care steps.
  • Providing direct patient care in the lower acuity areas of the emergency department for both adult and paediatric patients, under the supervision of an RN.
  • Assisting with routine personal cares, including activities of daily living.
  • Administering oral and intravenous medications in accordance with the medication administration policy.

Further details regarding this role are available in the attached Role Description. Evidence of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) status is required for employment, in line with legislation, government policy, and directives.
