Primary School Nurse - Goulburn Area, North East Victoria Region

The Department of Education Victoria seeks a highly self-motivated Division 1 Nurse, registered with AHPRA, to join the Primary School Nursing Program in the Goulburn Area, North East Victoria Region. This part-time, ongoing role is based onsite in Shepparton.

This position offers an opportunity to work with children in their first year of primary school, focusing on health promotion and health education.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this role involves providing a universal health screening service to children in their first year of primary school across Government, Catholic, and Independent schools, as well as English Language Centres. This includes:

• Responding to parent concerns and observations noted on the School Entrant Health Questionnaire (SEHQ).
• Conducting follow-up health and wellbeing assessments.
• Providing advice to teachers and families.
• Referring issues to appropriate internal and external agencies.

The Primary School Nurse will also assess and support children in years one to six where a concern is identified. The role includes health promotion and building the capacity of schools to address health, wellbeing, and learning concerns in children. This may involve developing, implementing, and evaluating health education in response to identified school health priorities.

Further responsibilities may include:

• Implementing nursing interventions and appropriate referrals to health professionals/agencies via the child’s parent or guardian.
• Providing a follow-up service to ensure children with health-related problems receive suitable assistance.
• Undertaking health promotion and education within program guidelines, acting as a health resource for the school community.
• Advocating for children and promoting child health as part of an inter-disciplinary team, liaising effectively with parents, teachers, and health, welfare, and education personnel.
• Maintaining accurate electronic records for assessment, referral, planning, and implementation.
• Liaising with the Secondary School Nurse to support student transitions, particularly for students with special needs or those at risk.
• Observing safe working practices and protecting personal and others' health and safety.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

• Work within a multidisciplinary team.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with school teachers.
• Network effectively with community health and allied health professionals, and youth services.
• Practice in accordance with Department of Education policy and procedure, and the Professional Codes, Guidelines, and Registration Standards set by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority.
• Hold a current Working with Children Check.
• Hold current registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority.

The Primary School Nurse is employed by the Department of Education Victoria and reports to the Regional School Nursing Program Manager.
