General Manager – Heron Island and Wilson Island

Heron Island is a coral cay situated on the Great Barrier Reef, encircled by clear waters and extensive coral formations. Accommodating nearly 280 guests, its near-perfect climate makes it an exceptional year-round location for both living and working. The island features a marine centre, activities centre, boutique, an award-winning day spa, a spacious lounge and bar with pool views, and the Shearwater Restaurant. Guest and staff marine activities include world-class diving, snorkelling, kayaking, and cruises.
Wilson Island is located off Heron Island, approximately 80 kilometres from Gladstone on the central Queensland coast. It offers a unique reef experience. Wilson Island accommodates a maximum of 18 adult guests in 9 Reef Safari Tents.
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced General Manager to oversee all facets of Heron Island Resort and Wilson Island Resort.
Requirements:
- A Business Management Degree is preferable.
- A minimum of 7 years of related hospitality management experience, including Front Office, Food and Beverage, Housekeeping, and Human Resources.
- Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure and manage competing priorities with a focus on guest outcomes.
- Previous experience in a fast-paced and evolving remote working environment.
- A proven track record of preparing budgets, monitoring financial information, and making decisions for corrective actions.
- Understanding of P&L statements and the capacity to implement impactful strategies.
- Proven leadership skills that support the alignment of culture and strategy through employee engagement.
- Ability to communicate and negotiate with all key stakeholder groups to resolve issues.
- Excellent interpersonal skills that support mentoring and coaching across all organisational levels.
- Proven ability to manage details and time-sensitive matters.
- Sound decision-making skills and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations.
General Manager Job Responsibilities:
- Prioritise guest-centric initiatives through strong operational leadership, observation, and engagement.
- Lead and inspire all operational teams to continually enhance the guest experience, service standards, and operational efficiency.
- Assume overall responsibility for the daily operations and commercial performance of the Resort, focusing on revenue maximisation, cost control, and business risk minimisation.
- Collaborate closely with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure effective management of all operational, financial, administrative, and compliance functions, adhering to legislative and company requirements.
- Develop, implement, and manage the Resort's annual budget and long-term business strategy to meet revenue, profitability, and growth objectives.
- Prepare, present, and deliver the Resort's annual operating budget, marketing and sales plan, and capital expenditure program.
- Identify business trends, operational risks, and growth opportunities, implementing continuous improvement initiatives across all departments.
- Ensure full compliance with Resort operating standards, SOPs, company policies, workplace health and safety requirements, environmental obligations, and relevant legislation.
- Lead all key property projects, including capital works, refurbishment programs, and operational improvements.
- Resolve complex guest issues and oversee service recovery strategies to ensure exceptional guest satisfaction.
- Drive the Resort's financial performance by achieving targets for revenue, profitability, guest satisfaction, and employee engagement.
- Ensure all business decisions are made in the best interests of the guest experience, employees, owners, and the long-term sustainability of the Resort.
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising guest experience or service quality.
- Analyse daily business performance reports and make timely operational and commercial decisions.
- Maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the Resort, fostering a positive workplace culture and strong employee engagement.
- Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing leadership team while promoting accountability and continuous improvement.
- Represent the Resort professionally with owners, corporate stakeholders, government agencies, suppliers, and local community partners.
- Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the General Manager role.
