Job Description

Hostel General Manager – Magnetic Island Operations

Magnetic Island Operations is seeking a full-time, on-site Hostel General Manager for its property on Magnetic Island.

The Opportunity

Imagine managing a vibrant 200-guest backpacker hub, complete with bars, an F&B offering, and your own koala park, all situated on Magnetic Island. This role presents a unique chance to lead one of Australia's most distinctive properties. A significant renovation is planned, and the company is looking for an individual to spearhead this transformation, driving Bounce Magnetic Island to become the premier island destination in Australia. This includes elevating the accommodation, bars, and wildlife park.

Why You'll Love It Here

  • A Unique Property: Oversee a property accommodating up to 200 guests, featuring a bar & restaurant, island atmosphere, and an on-site koala park.
  • Drive the Renovation: Play a central role in building and shaping the property through a major renovation.
  • Growth with a Brand: Join Bounce, a rapidly expanding hostel brand with upcoming openings on the Gold Coast and in Sydney.
  • Collaborate with Experts: Partner with a highly trained Head Ranger to maintain the wildlife park's standards.
  • Relocation Support: Assistance will be provided for relocation to the island.
  • Incentive Structure: An achievable incentive structure and KPIs are in place.

The Role

As General Manager, you will be the senior on-site leader, responsible for the entire guest journey, team culture, revenue, events, F&B operations, and the daily functioning of the property. Your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Leadership & Culture: Building a high-performing, inclusive, and enjoyable team environment. Leading by example, maintaining standards, and providing support where needed.
  • Guest Experience: Ensuring a positive guest journey from start to finish, aiming to convert feedback into positive reviews.
  • Wildlife Park Management: Collaborating closely with the Head Ranger to ensure the koala park remains a key attraction and a high-quality guest experience.
  • Renovation Oversight: Acting as the on-site lead for the renovation project across accommodation, bars, and the park.
  • Sales, Marketing & Revenue: Driving bookings, managing social media, optimising pricing, and pursuing all revenue opportunities.
  • Food & Beverage: Managing profitable and memorable bar and outlet operations that enhance both the atmosphere and financial results.
  • Events & Venue Management: Organising engaging nightly programming for social spaces.
  • People & Culture: Recruiting, training, coaching, and retaining staff.
  • Operations & Compliance: Ensuring all operations are safe, efficient, and meet required standards.

What Makes You a Bouncer

  • A confident and charismatic hands-on leader.
  • A strong communicator with a passion for connection and community.
  • A guest-focused individual driven by feedback.
  • Proactive and strategic, maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Skilled in building effective teams.
  • Comfortable managing both strategic objectives and daily tasks.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in hospitality or accommodation management, with a proven track record of leading and growing teams.
  • Sound knowledge of hospitality compliance and operational standards.
  • A love for wildlife, the outdoors, and island life is considered a bonus.

What Success Looks Like

Success will be measured by guests providing positive feedback and returning, a motivated and proud team, a successfully completed renovation that makes the property a local talking point, thriving bars and koala park, strong financial performance, and Bounce Magnetic Island becoming recognised as Australia's premier island destination under your leadership.
