Aboriginal Disability Liaison Officer - Orange Aboriginal Medical Service

Orange Aboriginal Medical Service is seeking a full-time Aboriginal Disability Liaison Officer to join their team in Orange. This identified position aims to make a difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with disability.

As a passionate and community-focused individual, you will play a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability to access culturally safe, inclusive, and person-centred supports, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). You will act as a trusted community connector, working alongside participants, families, Elders, service providers, and community organisations to advocate for improved outcomes and strengthen access to disability services.

About the Role

The Aboriginal Disability Liaison Officer serves as a cultural and community bridge between Aboriginal participants, families, communities, and disability support services. The role involves providing advocacy, information, and practical assistance, while contributing to ensuring services are culturally responsive and accessible.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as a cultural and community liaison between Aboriginal participants, families, communities, and disability service providers.
• Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability to access and navigate the NDIS and other relevant services.
• Advocate on behalf of individuals and families to promote culturally safe and inclusive service delivery.
• Build and maintain respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities, Elders, and local organisations.
• Promote awareness of disability supports, rights, and entitlements within Aboriginal communities.
• Provide cultural advice and guidance to staff and support the organisation in building cultural competence.
• Assist participants to develop service agreements, connect with providers, and coordinate supports as required.
• Collaborate with Support Coordinators, Plan Managers, and other agencies to deliver holistic and person-centred support.
• Maintain accurate records and case notes in accordance with privacy, NDIS, and organisational requirements.
• Participate in community engagement activities, events, and health promotion initiatives.

About You

Essential Criteria

• Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. This is an identified position under Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.
• Possesses a strong understanding of Aboriginal culture, kinship systems, and issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly those living with disability.
• Has experience working with Aboriginal communities in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
• Understands the NDIS, disability supports, or community services sector.
• Demonstrates excellent communication, relationship-building, and advocacy skills.
• Ability to work independently with flexibility, initiative, and cultural sensitivity.
• Holds a current Driver’s Licence.
• Holds an NDIS Worker Screening Check and Working With Children Check, or is willing to obtain them.

This is an Identified role under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, making Aboriginality an essential requirement. Aboriginal identified positions are created where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge, or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. These positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the criteria of being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as such, and are accepted by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

Remuneration

$35.00 per hour, dependent on skills and qualifications.
