The Royal Children's Hospital Parkville Full-time, Hybrid

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) is seeking two AI Product Engineers to join our team and contribute to our vision: "A world where all kids thrive."

The Hospital The RCH is a foundational member of the Melbourne Children's Campus, collaborating with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, and The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. With a history dating back to 1870, the RCH provides a comprehensive range of paediatric and adolescent health services, including tertiary and quaternary care for critically ill and complex patients across Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW, and beyond. The hospital employs over 6,000 staff, operates with an $850M budget, and comprises 12 wards and 350 beds. Annually, the RCH manages over 300,000 specialist clinic appointments, 90,000 emergency department presentations, and 20,000 elective surgeries. The RCH is committed to the Child Safe Standards and fosters high employee engagement, staff safety, and a positive culture through its Compact. Further information about the RCH is available.

About the Role These are two Permanent Full-Time positions within the Allied and Digital Health Division. You will be responsible for the design, development, and deployment of production AI solutions to address real clinical and operational challenges at RCH, including revenue integrity, clinical workflow, diagnostic support, surveillance, and service design. Your work will encompass the entire AI pipeline, from assessing the suitability of AI-based approaches to designing orchestration architectures and delivering the final product.

You will be part of a small, autonomous team that shares collective ownership in moving AI from validated concepts to production. This role reports to the Head of Intelligent Automation and involves close collaboration with engineers, clinical specialists, and operational staff. The technology stack includes Python and React with FastAPI, deployed primarily on Azure, utilising Azure AI Foundry and AWS Bedrock as the main AI platforms. AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor are integrated into standard practice.

What You'll Achieve:

  • Design and build AI orchestration architectures for clinical and operational issues, incorporating prompt chains, agent-based workflows, and hybrid systems that blend AI reasoning with deterministic logic.
  • Develop and deploy end-to-end AI-powered systems, managing data ingestion through to the interface for clinician and operational staff interaction.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of AI-based approaches with clinical and operational staff, determining suitable architectures and achievable accuracy levels prior to full development.
  • Apply creative and considered problem-solving to clinical and operational challenges that lack straightforward solutions.

Your Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, and/or substantial relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and deploying production software systems, with strong capabilities in backend development, API design, and at least one of frontend development or infrastructure.
  • Practical experience with AI orchestration in a production environment, including prompt engineering, multi-step prompt chains, agent architectures, retrieval-augmented generation, or hybrid systems combining AI with deterministic logic.
  • Proficiency in Python and React, with experience building APIs using FastAPI or equivalent frameworks, and experience with the Azure cloud platform.
  • Active use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) as part of a regular workflow.
  • An understanding of the healthcare sector and the ability to work effectively with clinical stakeholders, translating domain expertise into technical requirements.

For further information, please refer to the position description.

What We Offer:

  • Salary Packaging to increase your take-home pay.
  • Early Learning Centre childcare.
  • Parkville location with proximity to public transport.
  • Discounted on-site car parking.

Other Requirements:

  • A current National Criminal Record Check, or willingness to obtain one.
  • A valid Working with Children Check.
  • Compliance with RCH's "Staff Immunisation - Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases" procedure.

Application Process: To apply, please submit a resume and a tailored cover letter that details your skills, experience, and suitability for the position in alignment with the requirements outlined in the position description.
