Job Description

Avionics Engineer I - Gilmour Space Technologies

Gilmour Space is an Australian rocket company focused on pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion for small satellite launch vehicles. We are seeking a creative and experienced Avionics Engineer I for a full-time, hybrid role based in Yatala.

This is an opportunity to contribute to orbital launch vehicle development in Australia, where avionics systems are central to operations. You will work with power systems, onboard computers, sensors, networks, and control systems designed for demanding environments. As an Avionics Engineer I, you will join a high-performing team working with flight hardware and software from the outset. This position is suited for early-career or graduate engineers seeking practical experience across the entire engineering lifecycle, including requirements, design, integration, verification, testing, and operations. You will gain rapid learning, increasing responsibility, and direct contributions to systems that fly.

Your Contribution to Our Mission:

  • Collaborate within a team of Avionics Engineers to deliver avionics systems.
  • Assist with requirements definition, design activities, and reviews.
  • Support the integration of avionics units and subsystems, including power, compute, sensors, communications, and control interfaces.
  • Aid in verification and validation (V&V) activities at unit and subsystem levels.
  • Develop and execute test procedures, document results, and assist in closing out requirements.
  • Support environmental, functional, and integration testing campaigns.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Contribute to concept studies, trade studies, and COTS evaluations under senior engineer guidance.
  • Support Research and Development activities and production engineering tasks.
  • Coordinate with Mechanical, Propulsion, Manufacturing, and Production teams.
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors as needed.
  • Ensure engineering activities are documented and performed in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by Management.

Mandatory Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics, Computer Systems, Mechatronics Engineering, or a relevant qualification.
  • Ability to operate effectively in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
  • Demonstrated resilience and a willingness to learn in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Eligibility for NV1 Security Clearance is preferred.

Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet all of these criteria. We value hard workers dedicated to sending Australia to space.

  • PCB development of analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
  • Hands-on electronics testing, troubleshooting, and debugging.
  • Embedded software development (baremetal, RTOS, embedded Linux).
  • FPGA/SoC hardware and software development.
  • Integration and verification of avionics units.
  • Electronics analysis, including circuit simulation, power, and thermal assessments.
  • RF fundamentals, including antenna design, link budgets, or EMI testing.
  • Systems Engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with space or aerospace engineering standards (e.g., GSFC-STD-7000A, SMC-S-016, RCC 319, DO-254, DO-178).
  • Experience in space, aerospace, or automotive industries.
  • Exposure to waterfall and/or agile development frameworks.

The ideal candidate is motivated, curious, practical, and eager to build real systems rather than solely analyse them on paper.

How to Apply:

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident or hold an appropriate Australian work visa or work entitlements.
