Disability Support Worker - Rockhampton

Specialist Support Solutions Pty Ltd is seeking experienced Disability Support Workers to join multiple participant teams across the Rockhampton, Gracemere, Mount Morgan and Yeppoon region.

We are recruiting for several teams supporting participants with a range of complex disabilities, high intensity support needs, mental health, behavioural support, and personal care requirements. Successful applicants will be assigned to participant teams based on their experience, skills, availability, suitability, and the individual needs and preferences of each participant.

About the Role

As a Disability Support Worker, you will provide safe, respectful, and person-centred support in line with each participant’s goals, support plans, care plans, behaviour support strategies, and organisational procedures.

Depending on the participant team you are matched with, duties may include:

  • Providing personal care while maintaining dignity, privacy, and independence.
  • Supporting participants with daily living activities, meal preparation, domestic assistance, appointments, and community access.
  • Providing safe manual handling support, including the use of hoists, slings, wheelchairs, and other mobility equipment.
  • Supporting participants with emotional regulation, communication, social skills, and independence.
  • Implementing Positive Behaviour Support strategies in accordance with Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Responding calmly and professionally to behaviours of concern, including verbal aggression, physical aggression, property damage, emotional dysregulation, or inappropriate comments.
  • Monitoring and reporting changes in physical health, emotional wellbeing, behaviour, or presentation.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries while building safe, consistent, and supportive relationships.
  • Completing accurate documentation, progress notes, and incident reporting as required.

Participant Support Needs

We are seeking workers with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Complex Disability and Personal Care Support
  • Personal care
  • Manual handling and mobility support
  • Hoisting and transfers
  • Continence support
  • Domestic assistance and daily living support
  • Community access and social participation
  • Mental Health and Trauma-Informed Support
  • Supporting participants with mental health concerns
  • Maintaining a calm, consistent, and trauma-informed approach
  • Supporting participants during periods of emotional distress
  • Using de-escalation strategies and person-centred communication
  • Building trust and therapeutic rapport over time
  • Positive Behaviour Support
  • Implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans
  • Supporting participants with behaviours of concern
  • Following proactive, least restrictive, and person-centred strategies
  • Responding safely and professionally to behavioural escalation
  • Supporting children, young people, or adults with ASD Level 2 or 3, intellectual disability, or complex behavioural presentations
  • High Intensity and Complex Care Supports

Some participant teams require workers with experience, training, or willingness to complete participant-specific competency assessment in areas such as:

  • PEG feeding and enteral nutrition
  • Dysphagia and mealtime management
  • Seizure management and seizure first aid
  • Medication assistance and medication documentation
  • Blood Sugar Level monitoring
  • Diabetes support
  • Bowel care support
  • Complex physical disability support
  • Neurological conditions, including epilepsy

All high intensity supports must be delivered in accordance with participant-specific plans, organisational policies, training, delegation requirements, and competency assessment.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A minimum of 12 months’ experience as a Disability Support Worker or in a similar care/support role.
  • Experience supporting people with disability, complex support needs, mental health needs, or behaviours of concern.
  • The ability to provide respectful, person-centred, and trauma-informed support.
  • The ability to remain calm, professional, and resilient in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to follow support plans, care plans, Behaviour Support Plans, and organisational procedures.
  • A willingness to complete participant-specific training and competency assessment where required.
  • The ability to work as part of a participant team and communicate concerns appropriately.
  • Availability to work a rotating roster, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, sleepovers, active nights, and public holidays where required.

Gender-Specific Support Requirements

Due to participant support needs, personal care requirements, dignity, privacy, and participant preference, some participant teams require male support workers, and some participant teams require female support workers. Applicants will be considered and matched to appropriate teams based on participant needs, role requirements, experience, availability, and suitability.
