AEMO stands at the core of Australia's energy sector, operating as the independent energy system and market operator, and system planner. Our mission is to guarantee safe, reliable, and affordable energy for today, while facilitating the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. With the Australian government's commitment to a net-zero economy by 2050, AEMO is presented with a unique opportunity to collaboratively shape the future of our energy systems. Our operations are guided by principles of character, commitment, and connection. Join us in contributing to this significant sector transformation.

About the Role

The Operations Department is fundamental to AEMO's adherence to the National Electricity Rules, overseeing the operation of the power system that underpins the National Electricity Market (NEM). Within this department, the Operations Resilience Division collaborates closely with asset owners and users to manage the networks AEMO operates. The Systems Performance team is tasked with ensuring market ancillary services, such as frequency control, and asset performance meet expectations. This team also assists in resolving compliance issues and plays a key role in developing the procedures and specifications governing system and asset performance.

The primary objective of this position is to furnish technical input for the evaluation of power system performance concerning NEM Rules and generator performance standards. Effective technical assessment of compliance with rules and standards is crucial for the successful integration of new generation connections and the efficient operation of the NEM generation fleet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate the technical performance of generators, providing recommendations and reporting on instances of non-compliance with performance standards.
  • Examine power system incidents to produce analyses that support potential actions or improvements to address performance issues and non-compliance.
  • Author, contribute to, or review technical reports, ensuring a high technical standard and suitability for the intended audience.
  • Engage with AEMO internal teams and NEM participants to offer advice, facilitate information exchange, resolve queries, and contribute to project outcomes.
  • Support the ongoing growth of the Systems Performance team by providing assistance, coaching, and mentoring to graduates.

Required Qualifications

  • An Electrical Engineering degree with a focus on power systems and/or power electronics.
  • Professional experience in power systems, including knowledge of electrical engineering principles, particularly as they relate to electricity transmission, distribution, and generation.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with generator performance standards, generator technical performance, and/or generator operations.
  • Knowledge of national electricity rules pertinent to the performance requirements of generating systems.

Benefits

AEMO offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Flexible working arrangements: options for working from home, part-time, job sharing, hybrid models, and additional leave.
  • Professional development opportunities through projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance, and more.
  • Up to 4 days of volunteering leave annually.
  • Eligibility for annual performance bonuses.
  • Wellness programs, discounted health insurance, gym perks, and a comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
