Graduate Accountant

The Village Building Co. Limited, a prominent unlisted public company with a turnover of approximately $200 million, is a successful residential property developer and constructor operating across the east coast of Australia. We specialise in quality, affordable housing estates designed for diverse lifestyles and needs, undertaking the full spectrum of developments including land, house and land packages, apartments, commercial, and mixed-use projects in the ACT and Queensland. With a 20-year pipeline of upcoming work locally and interstate, this is an opportune moment to join our organisation.

This new role is designed to support Village Building's ongoing expansion by strengthening financial management and reporting. It will provide primary support to the finance team, collaborating closely with the Financial Controller and team members to ensure the smooth operation of month-end processing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions. The position will also contribute to budgeting and reforecasting efforts, and assist in the preparation of statutory accounts, including tax and compliance support.

This graduate position offers exposure to various facets of corporate accounting. It is well-suited for individuals with a minimum of 1-3 years' experience in an accounting, graduate, or finance administration role. Candidates currently in similar roles or those seeking to transition into commercial accounting are encouraged to apply. Recent graduates with a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline, who are currently enrolled in or actively progressing towards CA or CPA qualifications, will find this role offers commercial work experience rarely available in Canberra, positioning them strongly for future private sector career progression.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the preparation and processing of general ledger journals, accruals, and prepayments in line with the monthly close schedule.
  • Maintain and reconcile all assigned general ledger accounts quarterly, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and maintain supporting workpapers for all general ledger reconciliations, including the fixed asset registry.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations for all assigned accounts, promptly investigating and resolving any discrepancies.
  • Assist in the preparation of the quarterly management accounts pack under the guidance of the Financial Controller.
  • Process and review purchase orders and supplier invoices for accuracy and appropriate authorisation before payment.
  • Review and support oversight of the accounts payable and receivable functions, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Review and process corporate credit card transactions, verifying appropriate coding, authorisation, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and workpapers to aid the annual budgeting process.
  • Assist in the maintenance and update of corporate marketing review budgets.
  • Support the preparation of statutory accounts and associated workpapers as directed.
  • Assist with the preparation of income tax returns, FBT returns, BAS, and other statutory compliance submissions.
  • Assist with tax effect accounting entries under the supervision of the Financial Controller.
  • Provide general financial administration support to the finance team as needed.
  • Assist with treasury-related administration, including preparing cash management summaries and bank reconciliations.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

You likely possess a solid accounting foundation and strong analytical skills, with a genuine enthusiasm for working in a commercial, for-profit environment. You are currently working towards CA or CPA qualification. While direct commercial experience is not essential, experience in consulting or advisory roles that has developed strong stakeholder engagement and analytical skills is advantageous. Salary:

$70,000 – $85,000 per year plus an incentive structure.

Work Type: Full-time.

Location: Onsite at our newly renovated head office in Canberra City, opposite the Street Theatre, Canberra ACT.
