HVAC Project Manager (Data Centers)

Johnson Controls, Inc. is seeking an HVAC Project Manager for a permanent, full-time, onsite role in Sydney, NSW.

Johnson Controls is a global leader in thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization. We assist customers in optimising energy use, reducing carbon emissions, and achieving the precision and resilience needed in fast-growing sectors like data centres, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education. With over 140 years of experience, Johnson Controls delivers performance where it counts, leveraging advanced technology, lifecycle services, and an industry-leading field organisation to enhance customer performance, achieve tangible results, and contribute to societal progress.

This opportunity offers an attractive base salary plus superannuation and a car allowance, along with career and training opportunities.

Responsibilities include the end-to-end delivery of HVAC equipment projects within Data Centre environments, ensuring adherence to customer technical specifications, quality standards, and critical commissioning requirements.

Key responsibilities encompass:

Project Delivery & Execution

  • Managing the full lifecycle delivery of HVAC equipment projects, such as chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, and plant systems, into data centre settings.
  • Leading project execution from handover through engineering, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, installation, commissioning, and final handover.
  • Ensuring strict compliance with data centre standards, specifications, and commissioning protocols.
  • Maintaining detailed project schedules, tracking the critical path, and managing milestones in alignment with client programs.

Financial & Commercial Management

  • Overseeing project financial performance, including revenue tracking and forecasting, Gross Margin (GM%) performance, and cost control and variation management.
  • Identifying and actively pursuing opportunities to improve margins.
  • Ensuring timely invoicing and reduction of Unbilled Revenue (UBR) through accurate milestone completion.

Stakeholder & Customer Management

  • Serving as the primary liaison between customers (Data Centre operators, Tier 1 contractors) and internal teams (engineering, factory, service, logistics).
  • Cultivating strong working relationships with key clients to foster repeat business and enhance customer satisfaction (NPS).
  • Managing the performance of contractors and subcontractors on-site.

Technical Delivery & Commissioning

  • Providing full coordination and ownership of the complex, multi-tier commissioning process.
  • Overseeing technical compliance, including equipment specifications and submittals, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and witness testing, and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning.
  • Identifying project risks early (supply chain, program, technical, commercial) and implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring compliance with QA standards, OHS&E requirements, and data centre quality expectations, maintaining a zero-defect mindset.

What we are looking for:

  • A Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an HVAC-related discipline, or a Trade background with extensive HVAC project experience.
  • Proven experience delivering large HVAC equipment projects (chillers, plant systems) into Data Centres or critical environments.
  • A strong understanding of data centre design principles, redundancy, and mission-critical operations.
  • Experience with FAT, SAT, and commissioning processes.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems for mission-critical environments and mechanical and electrical interfaces.
  • The ability to review technical specifications, drawings, and design documentation.
  • Experience in project financial management, including forecasting, GM, and cost control.
  • Proficiency in MS Project, Excel, and reporting tools.
  • An understanding of supply chain and manufacturing lead times.
  • A strong leadership and accountability mindset.
  • The ability to operate effectively in high-pressure, program-driven environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • A proactive problem solver with a focus on continuous improvement.
