Base salary plus superannuation

Gilmour Space is the leading Australian rocket company, developing next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles. We are seeking a creative and experienced Manufacturing Engineer II (Machining) for a dynamic role contributing to our mission of sending rockets to space. Our state-of-the-art facility, located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, is purpose-built for in-house rocket design and manufacturing, equipped with the latest technology.

Contribution to our Mission:

  • Act as a liaison between design and manufacturing teams to optimise machined components for manufacturability.
  • Provide expert input on the manufacturability of machined parts.
  • Participate in design reviews, focusing on manufacturing feasibility, quality control, tooling requirements, and process optimisation.
  • Prepare detailed manufacturing process documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), QC inspection criteria, work instructions, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Develop advanced in-house machining capabilities for manufacturing complex spacecraft assemblies.
  • Lead machining trials and prototype development, validating new techniques or materials for future production.
  • Lead tooling and fixturing design development for machining operations.
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of manufacturing issues, investigating and implementing corrective actions for non-conforming components or processes.
  • Collaborate with the supply chain to ensure proper sourcing of production materials.
  • Enforce site and personnel safety standards, producing and updating WH&S documentation as applicable.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts for manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, improve quality, and lower production costs.

Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or closely related areas, or equivalent experience and qualifications (e.g., Technical certificate or qualification in a relevant field).
  • 3+ years of experience working in a professional machine shop setting.
  • Understanding of precision components manufacture using lathes, mills, and general workshop equipment.
  • Strong understanding of inspection methods.
  • Ability to read and generate engineering drawings.
  • Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking, organisational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • NV1 Security Clearance eligibility is preferred.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Expertise in manufacturing processes, including assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience working in a high-precision environment, supporting a broad range of manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA) to support the design of setups and tooling.
  • Ability to work well in a cross-functional team, interacting daily with engineers, technicians, and management.
  • Creative problem solver that can bring multiple disciplines together.
