Allied Grain Systems (AGS) is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to operate as the design-to-manufacture interface for grain storage and handling equipment. This role is based within our sister company, Mitchells Equipment Australia (MEA), located in Penrith, with an expectation of one week per month in Young, NSW.
You will be responsible for developing detailed, fabrication-ready designs. This involves close collaboration with production, procurement, and sales teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and align with manufacturing capabilities. Your contributions will extend to producing accurate drawings, supporting material selection, and driving continuous improvement throughout the design and fabrication processes.
The Role
Reporting to the Design Manager, with a dotted line to Production, your primary objective is to produce accurate, practical drawing packages and facilitate a smooth transition from design to manufacture.
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Producing 2D drawings in AutoCAD (essential).
- 3D modelling in Autodesk Inventor (preferred).
- Preparing and transferring sheet metal profiles for plasma cutting, alongside press drawings for folding operations.
- Interpreting fabrication requirements and breaking out steel sections for production.
- Liaising with steel suppliers, coordinating orders, and managing subcontract machining as required.
- Supporting the workshop with clear, buildable drawings and resolving technical queries.
- Assisting with basic component design and implementing continuous improvements to existing products.
- Contributing to tender layouts and collaborating with the sales team on project concepts and system layouts.
- Undertaking occasional site visits and customer meetings.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is practical, detail-focused, and enjoys engaging with both hands-on workshop personnel and office-based colleagues.
You will possess:
- Strong AutoCAD 2D drafting skills (essential).
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and ideally Vault (desirable).
- A solid understanding of fabrication and sheet metal manufacturing processes.
- Confidence in producing manufacturing drawings that are accurate, clear, and workshop-friendly.
- Strong communication skills and a team-first mindset that spans design, production, and sales.
