Mechanical Design Engineer
Barclay Recruitment is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for a full-time, remote position with an Australian family-owned manufacturer. This company has over 45 years of experience in the timber construction industry and specialises in designing and building custom industrial machinery for timber frame and truss manufacturers both in Australia and internationally. Each machine is engineered in-house to meet specific customer requirements, ensuring unique solutions for every project.
About the Role
This is a project-based design role offering significant ownership and variety. You will be responsible for the entire design lifecycle of machinery, from initial brief through to final sign-off. This includes 3D modelling, performing calculations, conducting FEA analysis, managing revisions, and overseeing floor sign-off. The engineering team is expanding, with active R&D in automation and robotics. The company is looking for an individual who is keen to contribute ideas and build lasting projects.
Responsibilities
- Design custom machinery from concept to completed assembly.
- Create 3D models and production drawings using Inventor.
- Perform stress, load, and motor sizing calculations.
- Conduct FEA analysis to validate structural performance.
- Manage drawing reviews, revisions, and final release.
- Support production during machinery builds on the factory floor.
- Liaise with purchasing regarding components and specifications.
- Update designs in response to evolving customer requirements.
- Contribute to robotics, automation, and R&D projects.

Essential Skills
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- 3+ years of experience designing industrial or capital equipment.
- Proficiency in Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software.
- Experience with large assemblies, BOMs, and revisions.
- Manufacturing design and drawing release experience.
- Practical FEA experience with sound engineering judgement.
- Strong knowledge of stress, fatigue, and materials.
- Knowledge of design for manufacture, machining, and welding.
- Experience taking designs through to manufacture.
- Experience with heavy machinery or industrial equipment.
- Full Australian work rights are required.
