Mechanical Design Engineer
Phoenix Steel Sales Pty Ltd is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Mount Druitt, NSW. This is a full-time, onsite position.
Position Overview
Burndy Cable Support Systems requires a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to their Engineering department. In this role, you will be responsible for the engineering design and validation of cable support systems, ensuring compliance with Australian and international standards for structural, fire, and seismic performance. You will play a part in nationally significant infrastructure projects, collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and sales teams to develop innovative products and technical solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Structural & Fire Load Design
- Conduct structural analysis of steel cable support systems against relevant Australian and international standards, including AS1170, AS4100, and NEMA VE1.
- Design systems to meet WS5X fire load requirements as per AS3013, utilising Burndy’s existing fire-tested solutions.
- Perform engineering calculations for load, stress, and tolerance to confirm design integrity.
- Collaborate with accredited testing laboratories to enhance Burndy’s structural and fire performance capabilities.
- CAD Design & Documentation
- Generate detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models using industry-standard software; SolidWorks is preferred, and Revit experience is highly regarded.
- Maintain precise engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and revision histories.
- Ensure designs align with manufacturability, quality, and cost objectives through collaboration with manufacturing and supply chain teams.
- Support design reviews and prepare technical drawings for customer-specific projects.
- Technical Sales Support
- Provide engineering expertise to assist the sales team with major and technically complex projects.
- Prepare technical submissions, product selection guides, and project-specific documentation.
- Attend client meetings, site visits, and industry events as may be required.
- Respond professionally and promptly to technical enquiries from customers and internal stakeholders.
- Research & Product Development
- Contribute to new product development from initial concept to commercialisation.
- Investigate new materials, manufacturing techniques, and industry advancements.
- Work closely with manufacturing, sales, and marketing teams to define future product requirements and engineering roadmaps.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 3–7 years of professional experience in mechanical design or structural engineering.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
- Demonstrated experience utilising 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and producing detailed engineering drawings.
- A sound understanding of structural engineering principles and experience applying relevant engineering standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Highly Regarded
- Experience within the building services (MEP), electrical infrastructure, or cable support industries.
- Exposure to fire load design and AS3013 requirements.
- Experience using Revit.
