The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency. AIMS is a trusted advisor, partner, and employer of choice, valuing integrity, innovation, collaboration, and respect. Our research into Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems informs their effective environmental management and advances global understanding of similar ecosystems. We aim to deliver practical benefits to all Australians and support the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry, and the community rely on our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions concerning the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS expert teams in Townsville, Darwin, and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.

This role offers the chance to join the Mechanical Engineering Workshop team, contributing to the design, prototyping, and production of mechanical components. You will utilise a broad range of manufacturing techniques and engineering materials to address varying design complexities. This position supports the delivery of high-quality, precision-engineered solutions that enable reliable and innovative outcomes for AIMS scientific research and other departments, including oceanographic, engineering, field work, and marine operations teams.

As a Mechanical Engineering Technician, you will contribute to workshop projects by producing components that meet various engineering, safety, and quality standards. The role supports the ongoing operation and development of projects, ensuring they can meet increasing demand associated with experimental and field-based activities. You will work within a well-equipped modern workshop environment as part of a collaborative team, utilising advanced CNC machining centres and additive manufacturing technologies to deliver high-quality, bespoke engineering solutions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring components are manufactured to required specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.
  • Ensuring research and operational activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and to specification.
  • Contributing to preventative maintenance programs to ensure plant and equipment across AIMS workshops are maintained in a reliable and serviceable condition.
  • Collaborating with team members to develop practical, manufacturable solutions that meet project requirements.

To be successful in this role, you will possess Trade Qualifications, a Cert IV in engineering, or an equivalent certified trade or competency-based course, with demonstrated substantial experience, knowledge, and proficiency in CNC machine programming, setting, and operation. You will have sound technical knowledge and expertise in operating medium capacity equipment commonly used in general engineering workshops, along with strong problem-solving skills, organisational skills, and adaptability. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse workshop environment is essential. A basic level of knowledge and experience in metal fabrication processes would be desirable.
