Job Description

Payroll Administrator

Nous Group

Melbourne VIC

Salary: $65,000 – $75,000 per year Work type: full-time Work location: onsite

This position focuses on building payroll foundations through precision, consistency, and judgement, rather than solely processing transactions.

Nous Group is an international management consultancy assisting leaders in Australia, the United Kingdom, and North America with complex challenges and transformational change. We assemble multidisciplinary teams to partner with clients, delivering practical solutions that create lasting impact for businesses, governments, and communities. Our purpose is positive influence, aiming to improve people’s lives by helping clients achieve meaningful outcomes, strengthen organisations, support communities, and realise a broader definition of success.

About the role

This is an opportunity to develop robust payroll capabilities within a supportive, close-knit team. You will join our Melbourne-based Payroll team, which is part of the wider Finance function, and contribute to the accurate and timely delivery of payroll across Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada. You will collaborate closely with a Payroll Coordinator, with support from a Payroll Manager and Payroll Officer. Your focus will be on several smaller pay groups, playing a key role in ensuring each payroll cycle is managed with care and consistency.

Payroll at Nous involves detailed, people-critical work where accuracy is paramount. While systems are being improved and automation is being introduced, the current environment relies on well-defined manual processes, reconciliations, and quality checks. You will need to be comfortable working independently, utilising written guidance, and enhancing your skills through practical experience. You will also be expected to interpret guidance, apply payroll rules in practice, and identify opportunities for process improvement over time.

This role is suited for an individual who appreciates structured, process-driven work and takes satisfaction in ensuring details are correct. While comprehensive knowledge is not expected from the outset, you will have the chance to take ownership of your learning and build confidence progressively.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver accurate and timely payroll across monthly and fortnightly cycles.
  • Manage new starters and employee changes, ensuring payroll data is correct and up to date.
  • Validate payroll inputs and support careful manual processing.
  • Reconcile payroll outputs, including timesheets, to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Respond to payroll and employee queries with clarity and professionalism.
  • Support payroll reporting and day-to-day administration.
  • Contribute to a team focused on consistency, quality, and continuous improvement.

What will help you succeed

  • 1–2 years of payroll experience and a solid understanding of Australian payroll fundamentals.
  • Confidence working with structured and manual payroll processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach.
  • Intermediate Excel skills.
  • Experience with Micropay, Sage People, or similar systems (helpful but not essential).
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and the ability to prioritise routine work.
  • Ability to learn from written guidance and apply it in practice.
  • Strong interpretation skills and attention to detail when working with policies, guidance, and payroll rules.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt when working within structured, process-driven environments.
  • A proactive approach to learning and improving ways of working.

Why join

  • Build depth in your payroll capability through hands-on experience.
  • Learn established systems, processes, and policies from the ground up.
  • Work in a close-knit team that values care, precision, and shared accountability.
  • Contribute to work that directly impacts people’s experience at Nous.
  • Be part of a values-led organisation recognised as a great place to work.
