Payroll Officer
Public Sector People is seeking an experienced Payroll Officer for a contract position. This role is based in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne and operates on a hybrid model. The salary offered is $43.81 per hour, with additional leave benefits and superannuation.
This is a fixed-term contract, commencing as soon as possible, running until November 2026, directly with a local government organisation. The position involves end-to-end payroll processing for a varied workforce within a P&C environment. This opportunity is well-suited for an individual who prioritises accuracy, possesses a strong understanding of payroll legislation, and can communicate effectively with employees and people managers.
Responsibilities:
- Perform end-to-end payroll processing, including data entry, production runs, managing entitlements, deductions, terminations, and salary packaging, ensuring compliance with relevant awards and enterprise agreements.
- Interpret and apply local government industrial instruments, tax, superannuation, and leave legislation to ensure accurate and compliant payroll outcomes.
- Address payroll queries from people managers and employees, clearly explaining concepts such as leave entitlements, pay composition, and tax.
- Maintain payroll records and generate periodic and exception reports for compliance and regulatory purposes.
- Uphold strict confidentiality and data integrity standards, contributing to the continuous improvement of payroll service delivery.
Requirements:
- A minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a payroll role, with experience in local government, the public sector, healthcare, or education being ideal.
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as finance, business, or HR.
- Sound working knowledge of payroll systems; PayGlobal experience is highly regarded.
- A strong understanding of awards, enterprise agreements, tax, superannuation, and leave entitlements.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to consistently meet payroll deadlines.
