About the position: As our critical infrastructure expands, we are seeking a Risk Business Partner with a strong technical background. This role serves as a vital connection between our engineering operations and strategic risk management. Reporting to the Head of Risk, you will be responsible for embedding our Enterprise Risk Management Framework and the second-line risk function within our complex, asset-heavy civil engineering business units. As a trusted advisor, you will be instrumental in cultivating a proactive risk culture, delivering specialised technical risk advice, and safeguarding our essential operational infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Technical Risk Partnership:
- Serve as the dedicated risk business partner and trusted advisor to engineering leadership, risk champions, and operational staff.
- Facilitate the proactive identification, assessment, and articulation of current and emerging risks associated with large-scale civil engineering projects, asset management, and operations.
- Risk Framework Implementation & Matrix Oversight:
- Drive the practical implementation of the Enterprise Risk Framework and technical risk tools across engineering business units.
- Champion and oversee the specialised Technical Risk Matrix to translate highly complex civil engineering risk assessments into clear, quantifiable enterprise-level risks for business leadership and the Head of Risk.
- Operational Risk Analysis & Continuity:
- Facilitate key risk processes, including risk and control self-assessments, control testing, incident management, and Key Risk Indicator (KRI) monitoring.
- Analyse technical operational data within civil and generation business areas to mitigate risks to asset reliability, uptime, and critical infrastructure integrity.
- Risk Culture & Capability Building:
- Promote a strong, accountable risk culture across engineering teams.
- Assist in developing and delivering tailored risk training and awareness programs to enable project managers and engineers to fully comprehend their risk profiles, compliance obligations, and control effectiveness.
- Relationship Management:
- Build and maintain collaborative, open lines of communication between Line 1 Risk Managers, Line 2 (Group Risk, Compliance), and Line 3 (Internal Audit) to ensure seamless information flow, shared learnings, and organisational consistency.
About the location: This role is based in Melbourne.
About you:
- Civil Engineering Expertise: A strong background, academic qualification, or deep technical domain expertise within civil engineering, asset management, or heavy infrastructure project delivery, coupled with a passion for how robust risk management safeguards engineering outcomes.
- Risk Architecture & Matrix Mastery: Comprehensive experience applying advanced risk management frameworks, with specific expertise in utilising and embedding a Technical Risk Matrix to evaluate structural, operational, and project execution risks.
- Proven Risk Management Experience: Greater than 5 years of experience in risk management, or an equivalent mix of heavy industry technical experience and risk advisory capabilities.
- Relationship-Driven Leadership: Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of acting as a collaborative, supportive business partner. You are highly adept at offering constructive challenge to senior engineers and business leaders, building consensus, and treating all relationships as true partnerships.
- Analytical & Strategic Mindset: Exceptional ability to analyse complex technical data, identify emerging trends or control deficiencies, and ensure operational integrity is designed into projects from inception through to delivery.
