Gilmour Space Technologies, Australia's leading rocket company, is seeking a creative and experienced Senior Propulsion Engineer (Turbomachinery) to join our dynamic team. We are pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles and are building state-of-the-art facilities for in-house rocket design and manufacturing, conveniently located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This is an opportunity to contribute to sending rockets to space and advancing Australia's presence in the space industry.

Your Contribution to Our Mission:

Your role will involve a variety of exciting and innovative tasks, including:

  • Leading and assisting with the design and analysis of turbomachinery development and upgrade projects within a dedicated turbomachinery team.
  • Developing in-house design and simulation tools for turbine and pump engineering.
  • Defining requirements and development plans for new and upgraded technical projects.
  • Preparing and enhancing the company's capabilities in the manufacturing, assembly, and testing of turbines, pumps, and associated auxiliary sub-systems.
  • Supporting the Quality department with quality checks, cleanliness inspections, and measurements of received, manufactured, and assembled parts.
  • Developing written procedures and checklists for test and commissioning operations, and providing support to test teams as needed.
  • Ensuring engineering models, simulation tools, and technical documents are current and aligned with Gilmour Space Technologies' policies and procedures.
  • Collaborating with the Head of Propulsion, program managers, and team members across the company to foster strong working relationships and meet daily operational requirements.
  • Providing senior influence, technical guidance, and supporting the development and work allocation of junior team members in conjunction with the team lead.
  • Performing other duties as requested by Management.

Mandatory Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • A Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in developing high-performance mechanical and fluid systems, ideally involving pumps and/or turbines.
  • 5 years of experience with CAD design of parts and assemblies (NX/Teamcenter is preferred, but other relevant experience is valuable).
  • Experience with at least one commercial FEA or Multiphysics simulation package (ANSYS is preferred, or NASTRAN, ABAQUS, CFD codes, etc.).
  • 3 years of hands-on hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing.
  • Eligibility for NV1 Security Clearance is preferred.

Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of engineers and delivering projects within tight schedule and budget constraints.
  • Experience in developing and testing rocket engines.
  • Experience in developing and testing rocket engine turbopumps.
  • Experience using industry-standard turbomachinery software and/or the ability to establish in-house developed codes and simulation techniques.
  • Experience using diagnostic tools, data analysis, and inspection methods to identify machinery failures and issues for maintenance or testing/commissioning.
