Job Description

Specialist/Senior Principal Engineer

DNV Australia Pty Ltd

DNV Australia Pty Ltd is an independent assurance and risk management expert. Our purpose is to safeguard life, property, and the environment, empowering customers and stakeholders with facts and reliable insights for confident decision-making. We leverage our knowledge to advance safety and performance, set industry benchmarks, and innovate solutions for global transformations.

About Energy Systems We guide customers through the transition to a decarbonised and sustainable energy future. Our work involves assuring the safety and effectiveness of energy systems, increasingly through digital solutions. We also assist industries and governments in navigating complex global and regional energy industry transitions.

About the Role We are seeking a dynamic and solutions-oriented Specialist/Senior Principal Engineer to lead power system planning engagements within Australia’s energy transition. This role offers an opportunity for a technically exceptional and commercially astute professional to lead impactful engagements with purpose and influence.

As a recognised subject matter expert in network planning, this position will provide technical leadership and direction. You will coordinate key stakeholders and be responsible for ensuring the PEMS business supports Energy Systems' strategic ambitions. The role requires analytical assessment of situations or problems, considering wider organisational concerns, and making considered decisions or recommendations that can significantly impact business objectives.

As a Specialist/Senior Principal Engineer in PEMS, you will play a key role in shaping our technical direction and strengthening the engineering capability within the team. You will provide deep subject-matter expertise on complex planning and market challenges, ensuring high-quality delivery and technical excellence in all engagements.

You will collaborate closely with project teams, Key Account Managers, Market Area Managers, and Segment Leads to support strategic opportunities and contribute to a strong customer experience. A core aspect of the role involves elevating technical standards, mentoring engineers, and driving knowledge development aligned with business priorities.

This position will focus on delivering high-value technical outcomes, improving efficiency, and supporting consistent utilisation across the team. You will help foster a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture by guiding technical approaches, sharing best practices, and contributing to capability growth. While not a people-management role, you will influence team operations and ensure we deploy the appropriate technical skills to address challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead complex network planning and power system analysis engagements, ensuring high-quality, consistent, and efficient technical delivery aligned with customer expectations.
  • Drive modelling, analytical approaches, and technical recommendations for transmission and power system planning, providing authoritative guidance on methodologies and outcomes.
  • Exercise sound technical judgement in decisions that influence project direction and departmental objectives within established strategic guidelines.
  • Influence and guide stakeholders through strong communication, technical credibility, and the ability to persuade and align others around engineering approaches.
  • Represent DNV externally as a senior technical authority in discussions with customers, partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Review and refine internal technical procedures and documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with best practice.
  • Contribute to defining project objectives and technical requirements, ensuring clarity of scope and robust engineering foundations.
  • Develop and review methodologies for proposals and scopes of work, ensuring effort estimates are robust, defensible, and aligned with engagement complexity and customer requirements.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring, and coordination to team members and junior engineers, supporting capability development and knowledge growth.
  • Participate in shaping the strategic technical development of the department, including identifying emerging needs and capability gaps.
  • Evaluate, introduce, and champion new tools, models, and technologies that enhance analytical capability and delivery efficiency.
  • Develop and implement improved engineering procedures, systems, and workflows to strengthen quality and consistency.

  • Flexible work arrangements to help employees maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal life while staying productive.
  • Health and wellness initiatives through our Be Well program.
  • Performance-based rewards.
