Systems Engineers – AIR6500 Program

About the Program The AIR6500 program is the Royal Australian Air Force's $3 billion initiative to develop a joint air battle management system, building upon Next Generation sensor and command and control system capabilities. AIR6500 aims to establish a fully networked ‘system of systems’ to synchronise air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, thereby maximising situational awareness and enhancing decision-making speed across the battlespace.
About the Role The AIR6500 program is expanding, creating multiple opportunities for Systems Engineers to contribute to a flagship Defence capability that shapes Australia’s integrated air and missile defence future. As part of various Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), you will contribute to the delivery of complex, system-of-systems capability across domains including communications, operational continuity, and support systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of Defence innovation within a highly collaborative, digitally enabled engineering environment.
Your Contribution:
- Develop and manage system and sub-system requirements within a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment.
- Support system architecture, interface definition, and integration activities.
- Contribute to system verification and validation planning and execution.
- Produce key engineering artefacts, including requirements, design documents, and trade studies.
- Engage with internal teams, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and external partners to support program delivery.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering practices and processes.
About You: You are an experienced Systems Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and working across large-scale engineering environments. You possess a collaborative mindset and are comfortable navigating ambiguity while delivering high-quality technical outcomes.
Your Experience and Skills:
- Experience across the systems engineering lifecycle (requirements, design, integration, and/or verification).
- Exposure to Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools (e.g., MagicDraw, Cameo, Rhapsody, or similar).
- Experience working on complex systems, ideally within Defence or high-technology environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Possession of an Engineering degree or equivalent industry experience.
- NV1 security clearance and the ability to handle Export Controlled information.
Desirable:
- Experience working within AIR6500 or similar large Defence programs.
- Exposure to system-of-systems integration and digital engineering environments.
- Knowledge of Defence capability domains (Command and Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, communications, etc.).
