Tax Director - Advisory
Company: Expert360 Location: Sydney NSW Salary: $250,000 – $290,000 per year Work type: full-time Remote/on-site: onsite
Our client is an established, tech-enabled finance advisory firm that serves founders, management teams, and investors across the Australian mid-market. They collaborate closely with leading VC and PE firms and the high-growth businesses within their portfolios, providing support across the full spectrum of finance, from CFO advisory and financial operations to tax structuring and compliance. The firm also founded Runbook AI, an AI-native finance managed services platform.
Tax is a core and expanding component of their advisory offering. This position represents an opportunity to lead and own the tax practice, leveraging existing strong client relationships, recurring revenue, and a clear growth trajectory.
About the Role
This is a practice leadership role. The firm seeks a commercially-minded Managing Director - Tax (Registered Tax Agent) to take ownership and lead the tax practice. This includes setting the strategic direction, cultivating the client base, and delivering high-quality work in both compliance and advisory. The successful candidate will inherit an active client portfolio and receive the full support of an established mid-market advisory firm with robust VC and PE relationships.
This is not a role within a large firm where tax is one of many departments. At this firm, the appointed individual will be the tax leader, with a clear mandate to expand the practice, build a team over time, and become a significant member of the firm's senior leadership. For those with strong technical skills seeking a platform, autonomy, and deal flow to build something meaningful, this opportunity is presented.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead tax compliance for corporate and group structures, including income tax returns, BAS, FBT, and consolidated groups.
- Deliver tax advisory and structuring engagements, covering entity structuring, reorganisations, ESOP/equity schemes (including ESIC registration), and transaction support.
- Manage personal tax structuring for founders, executives, and high-net-worth individuals.
- Provide tax due diligence support for M&A transactions and capital raises.
- Develop and maintain client tax positions, letters of advice, and board-level reporting.
- Stay informed on ATO developments, rulings, and tax issues specific to startups and VC.
- Contribute to the development of the firm's tax capability, including internal knowledge bases, templates, and service productisation.
- Drive the growth of the tax practice by contributing to proposals, building referral relationships, and evolving the service offering.
- Collaborate with the CFO advisory and finance operations teams on integrated client engagements.

- Demonstrated experience in personal tax structuring for founders, executives, and high-net-worth individuals.
- Proven ability to deliver tax advisory and structuring work, including entity restructuring, reorganisations, and transaction support.
- Commercial, client-focused mindset; comfortable working directly with founders, CFOs, and investors, without intermediaries.
- Experience within the startup, VC, or PE ecosystem, or a genuine desire to operate within it.
Highly Regarded
- Experience with ESOPs, ESIC registration, and equity scheme structuring.
- Familiarity with cross-border tax issues, particularly AU/NZ/US nexus.
- Background from a Big 4, mid-tier firm, or in-house at a PE-backed or venture-backed business.

Why this Role and Client?

- A mandate to lead and grow the tax practice within an established mid-market advisory firm, building from a strong foundation rather than starting from scratch.
- Rich and varied deal flow across VC, PE, and mid-market clients, encompassing seed-stage structuring, PE transaction support, and high-net-worth personal tax.
- Opportunity to work alongside a senior, experienced team whose principals have backgrounds in Big 4 firms, PE, and NYSE-listed companies.
