Job Description

Wagga Wagga City Council is seeking a Wastewater & Stormwater Engineer, with the position open to candidates from Cadet to experienced Engineer levels. This is a permanent, full-time, onsite role based in Wagga Wagga, with 35 hours per week.

This role offers the opportunity to apply your engineering expertise to shape essential community services, ensuring the reliability, sustainability, and compliance of Council's wastewater and stormwater networks. You will collaborate with operational teams, provide technical advice, support strategic planning, and contribute to infrastructure delivery that protects public health and the local environment. Responsibilities will vary based on the appointed level (Cadet, Graduate, or Engineer), influencing the scope of duties, autonomy, and remuneration.

Responsibilities:

  • At Cadet or Graduate Level:
  • Provide technical support to wastewater treatment and underground operations teams.
  • Assist in preparing analytical data, reports, studies, and presentations.
  • Contribute to investigations, studies, and infrastructure projects under supervision.
  • Research and apply engineering solutions to improve system performance.
  • Collaborate with team members to support works programs, asset planning, and service delivery.
  • Develop knowledge of compliance requirements, including environmental and regulatory obligations.
  • At Experienced Engineer Level:
  • Provide high-level technical advice and engineering support to operational teams.
  • Lead or manage the development and implementation of wastewater and stormwater strategic plans.
  • Prepare and present detailed technical reports, business cases, and studies to senior stakeholders, Council, and external agencies.
  • Coordinate and manage consultants, contractors, and project teams delivering investigations and infrastructure projects.
  • Research, develop, and implement best practice engineering solutions to improve system performance and outcomes.
  • Support and manage compliance obligations associated with wastewater infrastructure, including EPA licensing requirements.
  • Undertake stakeholder engagement with government agencies, contractors, and the community.
  • Provide leadership and engineering input into capital works planning, asset renewal programs, and infrastructure improvement initiatives.
  • Across All Levels:
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.
  • Build effective working relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications (or currently undertaking) in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, and/or related Engineering discipline relevant to wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Class C Driver’s Licence (or ability to obtain).
  • General Construction Induction Training Card (or willingness to obtain).
  • Professional Engineer’s Registration, or eligibility to obtain (for experienced applicants).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or ability to develop skills in, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.
  • Ability to contribute to strategic planning and infrastructure projects appropriate to your level of experience.
