Job Description

Secondary Food Science and Technology Teacher

Carey Baptist College Location: Harrisdale Work Type: Contract Work Setting: On-site

Carey Baptist College is seeking a passionate Secondary Food Science and Technology Teacher for its Harrisdale Campus, commencing in 2027. This role offers the chance to teach a subject where students can actively engage in creating, testing, and applying their learning. You will guide students through topics such as food preparation, nutrition, sustainability, food production, consumer choices, and hospitality skills, helping them understand the significance of food in their personal lives, families, communities, and future career paths.

You will join a team that prioritises practical learning with substantial depth. The college aims for students to leave the Food Science classroom not only with a completed product but also with developed independence, creativity, resilience, safe work habits, and pride in their achievements.

The ability to teach Certificate II in Community Services is highly desirable, presenting an opportunity to support students exploring people-focused career pathways and connect their learning with community, wellbeing, service, and future employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging Food Science and Technology learning experiences for Secondary students in an environment that encourages questioning, problem-solving, and learning through practical application.
  • Design well-sequenced, practical lessons integrating food science, nutrition, food preparation, sustainability, and consumer awareness.
  • Establish a safe, inclusive, and organised kitchen environment fostering student confidence in developing practical skills.
  • Instruct students on planning, preparing, evaluating, and improving their work, alongside understanding hygiene, food safety, and responsible kitchen practices.
  • Assist students in connecting Food Science and Technology learning with real-life decisions, future study, and employment opportunities.
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback to inform students of their strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, idea sharing, and contributing to the wider Technologies learning area.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging participation, perseverance, and ownership of their learning.
  • Where applicable, contribute to the delivery of Certificate II in Community Services and support students in exploring vocational pathways.

What Matters Most:

Food Science and Technology often serves as a space where students discover their capabilities. Your capacity to create a calm, structured, and encouraging environment will be as crucial as your subject expertise, whether students are already confident in the kitchen or learning fundamental skills like safe knife handling, following processes, teamwork, or recovering from setbacks.

The college seeks a teacher who can maintain high expectations while demonstrating genuine care, making practical learning purposeful, highlighting the relevance of student work, and building confidence through skill mastery.

What You Will Bring:

  • A committed Christian faith and a willingness to actively support the College’s mission, Statement of Faith, and values.
  • A recognised teaching qualification and current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Food Science and Technology in an engaging, practical, and responsive manner to diverse student needs.
  • A strong understanding of food safety, hygiene, kitchen management, and safe practical learning environments.
  • A genuine interest in food, nutrition, hospitality, sustainability, and their role in everyday life.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with young people and create safe learning environments for contribution and growth.
  • A collaborative approach, with a willingness to contribute to curriculum development and the broader life of the College.
  • The ability to teach Certificate II in Community Services, or a willingness to obtain the relevant qualifications and vocational education requirements, would be highly regarded.
