With operations across three sites in Central Victoria – Castlemaine, Maryborough, and Eaglehawk (Bendigo) – our landscape supply yards and garden nurseries are maintained to high industry standards. Our professional, qualified staff deliver expert advice, knowledge, and service to retail and trade customers.
About the Role: We are seeking a capable, high-performing, and experienced Retail Site Manager with substantial knowledge of quarry and landscape products to lead our busy Garden & Landscape team in Bendigo. This position involves overseeing both the retail nursery and the yard, requiring a practical understanding of landscape materials and operations. You will lead by example, inspiring a team of professionals while remaining comfortable with hands-on work. As an experienced Retail Manager, you will be confident in making strategic and operational decisions. You will be customer-focused, sales-driven, and dedicated to cultivating a positive team culture, with a strong commitment to continuous improvement. Collaboration with other Garden & Landscape Site Managers and the development of strong relationships within the team, across departments, and ASQ sites is expected.
Key Responsibilities:
- Uphold a safety-first culture, ensuring adherence to ASQ policies and procedures (Operational and Workplace Health, Safety and Environment) and that all personnel comply with these policies.
- Lead a diverse team including horticulturalists, sales/nursery assistants, café baristas, yard workers, and operators.
- Manage daily site operations efficiently and effectively, providing direction and collaborating with the Marketing Consultant on site promotions, site maintenance, store presentation, stock control, responding to alarm company call-outs/issues, asset management, and invoice approvals.
- Contribute to workforce planning, identify staffing requirements, manage staff recruitment and induction, develop staff rosters, conduct performance reviews and management, and provide training, development, and mentoring for supervisors and staff.
- Monitor and report on sales and purchases, negotiate with suppliers, manage and maintain the pricing database, and provide direction on product lines and cost-effective site solutions.
- Ensure site cost centre expenses remain within budget.
- Collaborate with the team to achieve sales and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) objectives.
Key Selection Criteria:
- Demonstrated leadership and people management experience, with the capacity to guide, motivate, and develop a team.
- Proven retail management experience is a requirement.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Horticulture, Management, or Business, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is desirable.
- Knowledge or experience in nursery and landscape products is desirable.
- Experience using Point-Of-Sale (POS) systems.
- Safety consciousness, strong work ethic, organisational skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
- Highly developed customer service, time management, interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines and customer requirements.
- Ability to work weekends and public holidays as required.
