Gunnedah Shire Council is seeking dedicated individuals to join its Works team as Operators and Skilled Operators within the Construction and Maintenance Department. This is a full-time, onsite position based in Gunnedah, NSW.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Operators: Earn up to $79,000 per year (Inclusive of A&R Bonus).
  • Grade 2 - Grade 5: $1103.16 - $1296.89 per week.
  • Up to $8,000 per year Retention Bonus ($2,000 per quarter).
  • 12% Superannuation.
  • Overtime where applicable.
  • Skilled Operators: Earn up to $79,000 per year (Inclusive of A&R Bonus).
  • Grade 7: $1237.70 - $1376.19 per week.
  • Up to $8,000 per year Retention Bonus ($2,000 per quarter).
  • 12% Superannuation.
  • Overtime where applicable.
  • Additional Benefits:
  • A paid rostered day off every two weeks, resulting in a 9-day fortnight.

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 38 hours per week.
  • 9-day fortnight.

Role Overview: Operators will be responsible for operating various construction and maintenance machinery, assisting in infrastructure projects, and ensuring the upkeep of public facilities and spaces.

  • Operators (Grade 2 - Grade 5): Perform a variety of daily tasks, which may include operating Rollers, Skid Steer, Watercart, and Slasher. Progression from Grade 2 to Grade 5 requires obtaining an HR licence, relevant plant experience, and successful completion of a relevant Cert 3. Gunnedah Shire Council will support this process through ongoing training and development, including annual performance evaluations and training recommendations.
  • Skilled Operators (Grade 7): Must possess all prior qualifications and skills of a Grade 5 Operator, along with specialist operational experience with equipment such as Excavators, Backhoes, Dozers, Graders, Truck and Dogs, Jet Patchers, and Loaders. Your entry grade will be determined by your current skills, qualifications, and experience, with career and salary progression available upon obtaining essential qualifications. Gunnedah Shire Council will support you through this process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain assigned plant effectively, safely, and in accordance with standing operating procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Council’s WHS policies and legislative requirements or regulations.
  • Accurately perform general road maintenance operational works required to construct, repair, and maintain Council’s infrastructure. This typically includes operating small plant and hand tools, performing traffic control duties, and applying basic engineering principles, systems, and processes.
  • Undertake occasional staff supervision and quality control where assigned.
  • Work constructively and cooperatively with other department members to complete work programs within agreed timeframes and standards.
  • Apply WHS and risk management systems in accordance with Council’s policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned administrative tasks accurately in accordance with Council’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required qualifications essential for the position and undertake agreed training to meet the position’s desired skill level.
  • Participate in on-call duties as required.

  • A current Driver's Licence.

Key Requirements:

  • An appropriate Cert 3 qualification, a willingness to undertake professional development, or 5 years’ experience in a relevant field.
  • HR/HC Driver's Licence.
  • WHS Construction Induction Certificate.
