The Role This position seeks a knowledgeable and detail-focused Senior Building Surveyor to contribute specialist statutory and technical expertise to the Council’s Building Services team. Reporting to the Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor, the role is crucial in ensuring Council's compliance with the Building Act and Building Regulations. Responsibilities include assessing applications, providing expert advice, conducting inspections, and leading compliance activities to ensure safe and compliant building outcomes across the municipality.
Working collaboratively within a team, you will contribute to the delivery of consistent, high-quality regulatory services and the continuous improvement of systems and processes. You will also engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, offering considered and practical advice on complex building matters. This senior technical role requires sound judgement, robust legislative knowledge, and the ability to work with a high degree of autonomy under delegated authority.
About You As a qualified and experienced Building Surveyor, you possess strong technical capability and a thorough understanding of the Victorian building legislative framework. You will demonstrate:
- Proven experience in interpreting and applying building legislation within a statutory environment.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills, with attention to detail and sound decision-making abilities.
- The capacity to assess complex applications and provide clear, practical advice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the preparation of reports and statutory documentation.
- A collaborative and customer-focused approach, with the ability to build effective stakeholder relationships.
- Well-developed time management skills, with the capacity to manage competing priorities.
You are proactive, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement, contributing positively to team outcomes and organisational goals.
Candidates with experience as a Building Inspector (Band 6, Starting salary $94,713) or similar experience such as a Building Surveyor (limited) are encouraged to apply. The position classification will be determined based on experience, capability, and registration.
